Playing The Game Young Adult edition eBook Simon Gould

Great detective book that leaves you guessing about who is "The Chemist" and then when you know, you wonder what their next plans are and if their next captured person will live or not.
This is a dark tale of what investigators go through - lack of sleep, no rest until justice is served, especially when it's a family member captured. The police work hard trying to figure out who "The Chemist" is and how to unsolve their puzzles sent as clues. After two victims die of an injection of a deadly chemical, the police are no closer to getting The Chemist. until some clues help pave the trail to the next victim that they are hoping to save before it's too late.
I liked the fast and steady pace of this novel. It was well written with just enough sick, twisted antics to make it seem very realistic. I highly recommend this book!

Playing The Game Young Adult edition eBook Simon Gould Reviews

Not a bad plot but....if you are going to be writing a story set in L. A. , CA, you need to write using American English, not British English...Whilst? Lift? Ring up someone? Also a need to better research American law...a person(s) cannot be arrested based on a newspaper article. There has to be an investigation to determine the validity of the accusations....
I notice there are quite a few negative reviews for this book but this will not be one of them. Yes...there were some grammatical errors but if you look past them, which I certainly did, you have a really good story with non-stop action, suspense, mystery and a few surprises.

This is a great story with detective Patton and his partner Charlie trying to track down a serial killer. Young woman are being abducted but the killer has made it a game that the 2 detectives must play out to try to find them alive before the end of the game. The killer makes it more personal when Patton's own daughter is abducted.

I have all ready started on book 2 and am anxious to see what this writer has in store for his readers.
The premise of this book had great possibilities but it didn't deliver. As many reviewers noted, the author couldn't seem to decide whether his characters were Brits or Americans and the language suffered for it. Most of us know the terms, but the words don't always translate. I found the grammar, syntax and overall poor editing distracting. The story and incidents had contradictions (In one instance the hero notes his partner has a stab wound that looks 'pretty deep' and then goes on to say it looks 'mainly superficial'.) The research regarding police procedure and general knowledge of some of the incidents in the book were way off or plainly wrong. Auto glass does not break into shards. A FedEx delivery driver doesn't drive from San Jose or Benicia to deliver a package in Los Angeles. Using icy roads in L.A. as a device is silly. Obvious errors such as, 6am tomorrow morning, mute point, three of us poured over the story and we did a quick sweep of the parameter littered the text. I will never understand why it seems that authors who publish e-books loathe editing.
LAPD Detective Patton and his partner Charlie Holland are intent on catching a serial killer called "The Chemist" . In the course of their investigation, they discover there are numerous other players in the case. Detective Patton comes to the realization that The Chemist" is after him next. The writing is very good and the mistakes are minimal. The characters are nicely fleshed out and believable. There is an ending of a sort but the villain gets to move on to the "next book". I enjoyed this book up to the ending. HOWEVER, I DO NOT l like books that do not come to a conclusion. I will not read another of these.
As an avid reader of police procedural mysteries I was excited to begin this book by Gould. As the story began to unfold I found myself really enjoying the concept. However, the author needs to decide if he is going to set this story in LA or London as his writing often mixed English and British languages. A "lift" in America does not mean the same as elevator or carpool. A "boot" is not the trunk of a car. All the "whilst" and "three quarters of an hour" were so distracting that I ended up getting more and more frustrated as I read. With the spelling issues (favour, colour, again decide which side of the pond you're writing for) and grammatical errors (who vs whom, me vs I) I found myself yelling out corrections as I read as if the author could somehow hear me.

I also didn't feel attached to the characters and found myself having to reread several paragraphs to figure out which character was currently being discussed.
Patton is a LAPD cop and a serial killer has targeted him. The problem is that he has no idea why he's being targeted. The killer, The Chemist, has a special reason that Patton is picked, and will only let Patton and his partner get as close as The Chemist wants them to. Also, the have to play The Chemist's game, and only The Chemist knows the rules. As Patton and his partner get to the truth, "The Game" take a very personal turn, then Patton knows exactly why he's picked. That's all I want to say about the plot, anything more would be spoilers.

There's a lot going on in Playing the Game, far too much to go into now. That being said, this is a fantastic read. It has a lot of plot twists that will keep the reader glued to each page. There are some amazing plot twists. The characters are life like and they seem to jump off the page. This also has a lot of cat and mouse between Patton and The Chemist, and that's one part I really enjoyed.

If you start this, you won't be sorry. I kept on saying to myself, "Just one more chapter....just one more chapter." I was reading this to all hours of the night, and loved every second of it.

Great read, get it and enjoy Playing the Game. I can't wait to get the next book in the series.
